Born 1934 in Ebersbach, Saxony, Germany. After a one-year stay at the "Fachschule für Energie" in Zittau, GDR, as Teaching Assistent, study of chemistry at the "Carl-Schorlemmer" Technical University for Chemistry in Leuna-Merseburg, GDR, and - after moving illegaly to West Germany in 1955 - at the Philipps-University in Marburg, FRG. In 1962, Ph. D. under the tutelage of Prof. K. Dimroth, and 1967 Habilitation. Since 1971, University Professor of Organic Chemistry at Marburg. In 1999 retirement. Visiting professorships at the Universities of Barcelona/Spain, Bratislava/Slovak Republic, and Oita/Japan. Author and coauthor of about 160 papers, patents, and books, e.g. "Solvents and Solvent Effects in Organic Chemistry", 2nd ed., VCH, Weinheim, 1988. Literary prize of the "Fond der Chemischen Industrie", Frankfurt/Main, 1989, for this book.
